EVA VisualCheck AI technology is supporting a large scale government screening project in the Dominican Republic. The project, that is currently proceeding by the Dominican Republic Ministry of Health in cooperation with MobileODT includes intensive screening at selected gynecological centers. Over the last three months, 9,000 women were screened for cervical cancer with the VisualCheck AI technology.
With a high cervical cancer rate among the Dominican Republic women population, early prevention can make a huge impact, saving lives and changing the outcomes for so many women. Furthermore, it can help the government save significant funds that would have been otherwise directed to treatment. Based on the initial success, the project is planned to be expanded now to additional screening of 50,000 women over the next 8 months.

Methods based on artificial intelligence (AI) have recently attracted a lot of attention, as they offer a mechanism to overcome the shortage of highly qualified expert in making clinical decisions on diagnosis and treatment. Within the field of cervical cancer screening and management, the combining AI with digital cervicography (DC) has appeal, as it can provide a rapid, accurate result with minimal inter-operator bias. Recently, a cloud-based classifier – VisualCheck – was integrated into a commercial DC system. To validate that VisualCheck works in different types of health systems, local expert panels were recruited to conduct a retrospective review of local images and their VisualCheck scores.
