More about our featured speaker…
Dr. Speck has doctoral preparation in public health nursing with a focus on SANE Programs and epidemiology. As a Board Certified – Family Nurse Practitioner, forensic nursing practice expert, and Previous Syntax Nurse Practitioner of the Year (1989), she has seen or supervised the care of over 15,000 acutely victimized persons. She researches trauma impact, develops policy, evaluates programs, and builds nursing workforce capacity through publication, education, and violence prevention initiatives that raise awareness about trauma and health. She demonstrates leadership in local, regional, national and international venues and as such, has over 25 career awards, including Lifetime Achievement from End Violence Against Women.
Dr. Speck represents CO-PI researchers, statisticians and statistical consultants in the prospective, blinded Post-Coital DNA Recovery Study with Minority Proxy Couples, completed in 2019 and funded by the National Institute of Justice Office of Justice Programs. Dr. Speck will explain one element in the extensive prospective study, funded by the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, which included the non-paid collaboration with EVA System, use of cameras in research, the technology learner curve, and some study results. For the larger study results, attend the IAFN poster session on Friday 9/13/2019.
Dr. Speck will explain the study and the methods for assessing photographs and study data. The photographs were assessed using the PDIQSS© tool for quality using characteristics of naturalness and clarity (pixilation) (Ernst et al, 2011).
The purpose of the presentation is present findings that distinguish reproductive-aged women with a history of prepubertal penetration from post-pubertal penetration and identify distinguishing and differing characteristics of the vaginal and cervical structures.
The findings reveal there were significant changes of the structure of the hymen and pelvic floor appearance, and there was regional function between women penetrated by adult male penises before and after puberty (menses). Serial photography exposed the potential for iatrogenic trauma with speculum. Using the HERS© tool to evaluate estrogen effect (Speck & Patton, 2007), incidental findings included association of pH with vaginal discharge characteristics throughout the menstrual cycle, where normal discharge was always “white” even in the presence of menses!
